The beginning of the end is here, and “Lost” producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live” after the show’s season premiere to break some news. The creative team dropped a bomb on the studio audience and viewers at home when they revealed the show’s finale air date.

The producers acknowledged that announcing “Lost’s” end date 3 years ago has made the response to the show even greater. They stated that ABC exec Steve McPherson really allowed them to end the show on their terms, and they’re really grateful for the network’s cooperation. There are so many shows out there that jump the shark and need to be put out of their misery and they don’t want “Lost” to become one of them. Therefore, the air date for the series finale has been set for Sunday, May 23rd.

Why is the show ending on a weekend as opposed to its regular time slot? Maybe because it’s on 5/23, dun, dun, dun! [Spoiler] It also turns out that Jimmy and I have a similar theory about Sayid possibly being possessed by Jacob at the end of last night’s episode. Cuse and Lindelof stated that he might want to watch a few more episodes to see how that scenario evolves.
