Avatar has officially taken Titanic down a peg, by ripping the 1997 film of its two all time grossing titles. Last weekend the first nail was put into its coffin when Avatar became the highest grossing film worldwide after raking in $2,048,130,844 as compared to Titanic‘s total of $1,843,201,268. Once that happened we all knew the domestic record wouldn’t be far behind.

According to Variety, Avatar is the new champ and has become the highest grossing domestic film of all time by pulling in $601.1 million dollars. Titanic previously held the top spot with $600.8 million, and there’s still more money to be made. Avatar has been on top of the U.S. charts for seven straight weeks and has continued to bring in decent numbers.

This massive financial coup for Fox and James Cameron could be attributed to the higher ticket prices and the film’s 3D screenings. Sources say that close to 80 percent of Avatar‘s gross has been earned via 3D viewings. This is an amazing feat for the film that’s only been in theatrical release in the U.S. for 47 days. It took Cameron himself 12 years to knock down his own record holder so how long do you think it will take for someone else to snag the title?

Are you surprised that Avatar has managed to take Titanic’s domestic record so quickly? Will anyone be able to replicate this type of success?
