Fox may have Alvin and the Chipmunks and Avatar, but Columbia’s got their hands on the original little blue men. They’re producing a big budget computer animated version of the popular show The Smurfs, and a new photo has just leaked online. A teaser poster was released a few months back that featured one of the main characters, and now we’ve got a new image courtesy of UGO.

The Smurfs was a popular Hanna-Barbera series that ran almost ten years on television gaining fans from all over the world. It centered on a group of little blue men who wore white pants and hats and lived in a happy forest without a care in the world. They were so popular that they even spawned a few rip offs including the Snorks, remember those creeepy things?

At the moment, the Smurfs movie is in pre-production in New York City, and it sounds like it will mimic the Chipmunk‘s and be a mixture of both live action and CGI. The photo that’s found itself on the web is of a character named “Smurfy” or at least that’s what it says on the side of him. He kind of creeps me out because the picture’s in black and white, yet his face is so detailed. The Smurf’s are cool when they’re in 2-D and tiny, but in this film it looks like they’ll be larger than life.

The Smurfs is scheduled to hit theaters on July 29, 2011.

What do you think of this CGI version of The Smurfs?
