We’ve all heard about the rebirth of the popular Jim Henson Muppets’ franchise, and now rumors have sprung up as to who will bring the next installment to the silver screen. According Vulture, the co-creator of the HBO series, “Flight of the Conchords” may direct The Muppets new movie.

According to a Disney insider, James Bobin, who helped create the now-defunct “Conchords” is being offered the director’s chair from Walt Disney Studios for their upcoming Muppets film. This info comes from a source deep within the Disney fold, who states “the movie is James’ to direct — if he wants it.” No one will confirm the deal on Bobin’s side or the studio’s, but word on the street has the film starting production by late summer.

The film was originally supposed to be directed by co-writer Nick Stoller, but he’s been busy wrapping up post production on the Russell Brand film, Get Him to The Greek. The only thing that could stand in the way of Bobin’s deal is the Judd Apatow comedy Bridesmaids, which was co-written by SNL’s Kristen Wiig. It centers on two women fighting for the right to plan their best friend’s wedding party.

Even though Bridesmaids sounds tempting, who the hell would turn down The Muppets? The property is a generational classic that is marketed to all ages. The Apatow comedy sounds great and all, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that he needs to hop on asap. Hopefully he makes the right decision.

Do you think Bobin should take on The Muppets Movie, or Bridesmaids?
