George Lucas is a very talented writer and director, but I’ve never taken him for a song and dance man. According to THR, he’ll be embarking on a new filmmaking journey that will be a lot different from anything else we’ve seen from him. He’s doing a musical, but not just any musical. It’s going to be a CGI animation about fairies! It’s George Lucas, did you really expect it to be that cut and dry?
According to the trade, Lucas is gearing up to tackle the untitled project that’s currently in preproduction at his ultra-exclusive Skywalker Ranch. Lucas hadn’t directed a film since 2005′s Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, but is finishing up his war drama Red Tails, the World War II story of the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first African-American pilots.
As for his upcoming musical, the screenplay was written by David Berenbaum, who wrote Elf and The Spiderwick Chronicles. I haven’t had the opportunity to see the latter film, but Elf is one of my favorite holiday comedies. Judging from these two, it sounds like Berenbaum knows a little something about mixing fantasy and reality.
The film will be directed by Kevin Munroe, and is expected to feature music from a wide range of sources. Munroe has had his fair share of CGI movies, he directed the pseudo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, TMNT back in 2007. A representative for Lucas said it was too early to comment on the details of the project, so we don’t have that much info to go on. Stay tuned…
Do you think Lucas can pull off a musical?
