Director Gabriele Muccino has landed a new gig, and it’s a sci-fi film starring Keanu Reeves. This will be a nice change of pace for the director whose previous English language films include The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. It’s time to take a break from all the melodramatic sap, and tap into the world of science fiction.
According to Variety, the Italian director is in negotiations to helm Passengers, a film that already has Reeves set in the lead role. The film will be produced by Morgan Creek and is being described as “a love story set on a space ship.” The story for the film centers on a group of passengers making a centuries long voyage to a new planet while in a deep sleep. Due to a computer glitch one of them is awakened (Reeves) and is faced with 90 years before anyone else comes to. In fear of growing old alone, he awakens a beautiful woman to be his companion.
The actress starring opposite Reeves is a “lesser known” talent than the actor, but no name was given. The script was written by Jon Spaihts and even though it’s not as depressing as Seven Pounds there’s still an element of sadness here. Just when we thought Muccino had gotten away from all of that.
What do you think of Muccino taking on Passengers? What do you think of the film’s plot?
