I stopped watching “Ugly Betty” a few episodes into its first season so this news doesn’t personally effect me, but those of you who stuck around are in for some pain. According to EW, “Betty” has been officially canceled by ABC. The alphabet network won’t renew the show for a fifth season, and that’s not as ugly as it gets.
ABC has just informed the show’s producers that this season will be their last, and they won’t even get the full 22 episodes that they were expecting. Instead, the season will round out with an even 20 as the network refuses to order any beyond that. This news shouldn’t put anyone in a depressed stupor because you could smell it coming a mile away. The ratings for the show have been terrible over the past couple seasons, and cancellation talk has been floating in the air for a while.
There is a bright side to this announcement, the writers of the show have enough time to come up with a fitting end for the series that will satisfy the fans. Executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson confirmed as much in this joint statement:
We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.
How much do you want to bet that the series finale reveals America Ferrera in all her beautiful glory? Just saying.
How do you feel about Ugly Betty being canceled? Did you see it coming?
