Dammit Sam Worthington! I thought you were going to take a break from this iconic stuff? It’s just been confirmed by the trades that the actor is in talks for the upcoming vampire film, Dracula: Year Zero. Earlier today we got the scoop from Latino Review that Universal was eyeing the actor to take on the legendary character and it sounds like he’s going to do it.

This marks the first deal Worthington has made since the record breaking success of Avatar, and he’s capitalizing on his popularity. Dracula:Year One is a period piece based on the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler that will incorporate some mystical vampire lore. The film will be directed by Alex Proyas, who last helmed the Nicolas Cage movie Knowing, and will be produced by Michael De Luca.

The spec script for the film was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, whose story concentrated on the origin of the Dracula character. “It seeks to depict Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.” This casting news literally makes my head spin.

Worthington did a lot of dramatic work in his native Australia, his performance in Somersault was amazing, but Dracula? I can’t wrap my head around him playing this dark, Transylvania dwelling man-beast who happens to have a sensitive romantic side. What the hell?

Could you buy Sam Worthington as Dracula? Who do you think could play the role better?
