After the unsuspecting news of actress Jean Simmons’ death, it’s only right to take a look at her long career. Simmons worked with some of the biggest names in the business including the legendary Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando, and Gregory Peck. She was a lady of taste and class and she promoted that no matter what character she played. After looking through her long resume of films, you can easily see that the actress not only worked but trained with the best…

Simmons has to be one of the most underrated British imports Hollywood has ever had. She has worked with some of the most talented people in the entertainment business, yet she never got her just desserts. She never won an Academy Award despite being nominated twice. One of the nods was for her work in Hamlet, opposite Olivier, which we have a photo of below. It’s hard to believe that some of these performances have gone unnoticed for such a long period of time.

My favorite role of hers was as the strong yet vulnerable Varinia in Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus. What’s yours?

Who was your favorite Jean Simmons character?

I fell in love with her in "Young Bess", she was a Lady of many talents. So beautiful, but never lost her sweetness. The world is a sadder place, and Heaven as a new angel.

It was a privilage to speak to her on the phone for 45 minutes in early 2000, after she phoned me up thanking me for sending copies of articles abour her from 1940's and 50's Picture Post and Illustrated magazine articles. I still have her on a phone tape, leaving a message.

In the words of her character Sargeant Sarah Brown in GUYS & DOLLS, she can honestly say with her head held high :

    If I were a bell I'd go Ding-Dong-Ding-Dong-Ding !!!!

In the inimitable words of Jean Simmons the person I spoke to on the phone I remember her saying 'Darling – I've worked with them all……..'

RIP JEAN we are missing you already.
