That's a big thing to leave out don't you think? He is a vet dropout from Cornell, and it is a B-level circus by the name "Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth", and the whole story is told from the point of view of him as a 90 year old man in a nursing home. It was an incredible book, hopefully the movie will be half as good. If you read the book, you'd know that the description of the story Variety gave and the one you gave are one in the same.
