It’s finally here. The first trailer for the big screen adaptation of the “Saturday Night Live” spin-off, MacGruber. It’s been a long time since an SNL skit was turned into a feature film, the last noted attempts were The Ladies Man, A Night at the Roxbury and Superstar. Now, several high quality photos have been released for MacGruber as well as a red band trailer. It’s time to get down with some bad eighties fashion and unnecessary action…

The film centers on the MacGyver-esque character MacGruber and his attempts to stop a criminal from pulling off a massive scheme. Ryan Phillippe plays an army officer named Piper, who unwillingly works with MacGruber to bring down a villain named Cunth, played by Val Kilmer. The overall story centers on a retired MacGruber living as a monk in Ecuador — until he’s enlisted to fight the evil Cunth, who has a nuclear warhead; the mission is personal because Cunth killed MacGruber’s bride.

What makes this trailer so hilarious is the fact that it starts off like a legitimate action film with the right editing, images, music and even the deep commanding voice of Powers Boothe. On the comedic side, Val Killer sporting a very sleazy ponytail, along with MacGruber’s undercover “Miami Vice” look is enough to get me laughing. The biggest plus this movie has to offer is Phillipe, as the good looking young solider. It’s great to finally see that guy in a comedy.

MacGruber explodes into theaters on April 23, 2010.
