2010 Critics Choice Awards: The Winners
By Krystal Clark
Before we get to the Golden Globes on Sunday we have to make a stop at the 2010 Critic’s Choice Awards. The ceremony took place on Friday, and honored the best in film from the previous year. The front runners of the night included the musical Nine, and the Nazi drama Inglourious Basterds with ten nominations each including Best Picture. They both appeared in more categories than anyone else, but still had to fight off some stiff competition including Jason Reitman‘s Up in The Air, and Kathryn Bigelow‘s The Hurt Locker.
And the winners are…
- The Hurt Locker *** WINNER
Avatar
An Education
Inglourious Basterds
Invictus
Nine
Precious
A Serious Man
Up
Up In The Air
The Best Picture winner shouldn’t really be a surprise considering The Hurt Locker has swept almost every major critics award known to man. The one exciting thing to come out of this repetition is the fact that we might get our first female Oscar winner for Best Director. That’s the ‘direction’ it looks like it’s going in. Bigelow picked up the award this evening and was welcomed by a standing ovation because people know what’s going to happen next month. History will be made.

Be warned: All the technical awards wreak of Avatar so if you’re one of the very few who weren’t a fan of the film you’re not going to enjoy these results. James Cameron’s latest swept all the major categories in this section including Best Cinematography, Editing, Sound, Art Direction, and of course Visual Effects. That man didn’t spend damn near 15 years of his life on this movie for nothing. We could see a similar result at Sundays’ Golden Globes and down the line at the Oscars. Avatar might not take home any acting awards this year, but technically this movie can’t be beat.
