Damn Robert Downey Jr.’s fast! Earlier today everyone was buzzing over the fact that the actor opted out of the DreamWorks sci fi-western Cowboys & Aliens. The Los Angeles Times speculated that his workload was to blame for his resignation from the film. He already has the Iron Man franchise on his shoulders, and now Sherlock Holmes has taken priority. According to EW, the sequel will begin production later this year.

An inside source for EW has learned that there’s no speculation about it, Cowboys & Aliens conflicted with Downey’s schedule for Sherlock 2, and he wasn’t having it. It’s hard to believe that the Christmas release was a huge success because it opened in the shadow of James Cameron‘s Avatar. But so far it has accumulated over 300 million dollars worldwide and counting, so it’s no surprise that Warner Bros wants more.

The studio commissioned a script for a sequel way before the film hit theaters, and are already eyeing a production start date in June. If you’ve seen the first film you know that the second movie was already set in stone. It had everything you needed to lure in an audience for another go around. The big question is will Guy Ritchie return to direct? And will Brad Pitt star as the film’s villain?

These are all questions that will be answered in due time, but until then take comfort in knowing that you’ll see plenty more of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law‘s comedic antics in the future.

Are you excited about a Sherlock sequel? Who do you think will play the villain?
