Peter Sarsgaard is reportedly in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond, the villain in the upcoming comic book adaptation of Green Lantern. It seems crazy that they’re still casting this film, but when it’s good news like this, I’ll take what I can get!

There had been some rumors that Jackie Earle Haley had got the part, but apparently it’s still up for grabs even though DC started principal photography on the film just yesterday and looks to begin shooting in March in New Orleans.

If all goes well Sarsgaard will play “the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor” alongside Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan  and Blake Lively as Carol Ferris.

Here’s the official synopsis as of now:

Reynolds will star as a test pilot who finds a downed spacecraft with a dying alien who passes him a powerful ring, introducing Jordan to a interstellar police force known as the Green Lanterns.

The film is set for release in theaters domestically on May 6, 2011.

What do you think of Sarsgaard joining the film?

Quick note, Green Lantern is a DC Comics property, not Marvel. Aside from that fanboy quibble, I like the news but hope they don't fill the first film with too many villains. Any word on what the plot is?
