Just last night Sandra Bullock received the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Movie Actress of 2009, which wasn’t hard to believe. The actress had two solid box office hits last year, and has racked up plenty of acclaim and Golden Globe nominations for her work in The Proposal and The Blind Side. During her crazy journey over the past 12 months, she’s managed to break a record or two along the way.
Thanks to the surprising box office performance of The Blind Side, Bullock has earned a history making title that no other actress can touch. In its seventh week of release her football film made 208.5 million in box office sales becoming the first movie with a female as the top-billed star to surpass the 200 million dollar mark. Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon, nor Julia Roberts in her heyday can attest to that type of box office clout.
The studio execs over at Warner Bros expect the film to hammer out another 30 million before its theatrical run is completed. With all the pressure of awards season, the actress is gearing up to take a break from the movie business to enjoy her home life.
“I don’t want to open anything and read anything right now,” she says. “I’m enjoying too many other things in my life. Once you get a project, it’s a lot of time out of your life. I don’t want to leave home right now.”
After the amount of work she’s put in, I think we can all agree that she’s earned a well deserved break. It’s great to see female led films receive critical and commercial success, because it shows the male dominated studio system that there is an audience for them that doesn’t include teenagers or little old ladies.
What do you think of Bullock’s record breaking year?
