Avatar should change their tagline to ‘over one billion served,’ because that’s exactly what happened this past weekend. James Cameron‘s latest epic continues to dominate the box office and has left the The Dark Knight in its wake. The film has landed on top at theaters for the third week in a row, and it shows no signs of stopping.
After only 17 days, Avatar has grossed a worldwide total of 1.02 billion dollars. This makes it one of the fastest films in history to meet that mark. It went on to set another record for New Years weekend with 68.3 million dollars domestically, only down 10% from its Christmas gross. It also had the highest third weekend gross for any film surpassing the record set by Spider-Man back in 2002, which had 45 million.
After a little over two weeks Avatar has earned 352 million domestically and 670 million worldwide, making it the fourth largest film of all time. It knocked The Dark Knight down to the fifth spot, and only three films stand in its way, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and of course Titanic.
The one thing that continues to surprise fans and industry folks are the steady numbers Avatar continues to pull in. It hasn’t suffered a major drop off since it hit theaters on December 18th. The film has stayed in the same range, which means people are coming back for seconds and telling their friends about it. After almost 14 years Cameron returned to the game with a big bang! Move over Michael Bay and McG, the king is here.
Are you surprised by Avatar’s success? Do you think it will surpass Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings?
