Golden Globe Nominee: Avatar

Avatar is a theatrical beast that continues to dominate the world wide box office. It’s one of the fastest grossing films of all time, and according to the latest numbers after only 13 days it will be the second largest movie of 2009. After less than two weeks, Avatar is on the heels of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to become one of the most commercially successful releases of the year.

According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, Avatar has just crossed the 800 million dollar mark for total international sales. This is quite a feat considering it took Transformers Revenge of the Fallen 16 weeks in theaters to pull off its worldwide cume of  $834,969,807. At the moment Avatar stands with $268.8 million domestically and Fox executives expect that number to grow to 335 million by Sunday’s end. If that happens it will surpass The Half-Blood Prince, New Moon, Up, and The Hangover in U.S. ticket sales for 2009.

When all the numbers are tallied, Fox expects Avatar to follow Cameron’s predecessor Titanic as another billion dollar blockbuster. The New Year’s weekend will be the last opportunity for the the studio to capitalize on the holiday spending of moviegoers. With 800 million dollars earned in less than two weeks, Avatar will find itself in the company of Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, and of course Titanic.

Do you think Avatar will be as successful as Titanic?
