How many people have been following the insane Ghostbusters 3 saga? Every few weeks there’s something new regarding the long pending sequel and here’s another update to feed your addiction. Word is spreading like wildfire that the film is getting closer and closer to a production start and we can expect to see it in theaters sometime in 2011.
We’ve heard tidbits from the majority of the franchises’ cast members including Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and even Bill Murray to an extent. Now, Harold Ramis has decided to put his two cents into the rumor mill to let us in on if and when the film will hit theaters. The actor-writer-director recently spoke to Heeb Magazine, and gives us a tentative start date for production and its theatrical release.
Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We’ll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future … GB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011.
The idea of a new group of Ghostbusters on the block is what will determine whether the third film works for me. It’s always hard to watch a sequel years after its predecessor with multiple new characters. They always come off as being too “hip’ and take away from the original characters. Hopefully that won’t be the case here, but don’t hold your breath.
Do you think GB3 will hit theaters in 2011 or later down the line?
