Jenny from the block is back to making bad feature films with her latest project, The Back-up Plan. It’s a romantic comedy that co-stars former Three Rivers and Moonlight actor, Alex O’Loughlin. The trailer proves that Lopez likes to stay in familiar territory when it comes to choosing her roles, because here’s another borderline slapstick movie, with an unconventional love story at the center. How many times have we seen this from her?
The Back-up Plan centers on Zoe (Lopez), a single professional who’s biological clock is ticking. She hasn’t found Mr. Right, but is ready to start a family so she goes to extreme measures to begin the process. First, she asks one her closest male friends to “donate” to her cause but he declines, which leads her to the next logical step, the sperm bank. After she’s implanted and pregnant she accidentally stumbles upon the man of her dreams, Stan (O’Loughlin).
Unaware of her condition, Stan begins to date Zoe and eventually falls in love with her. As time progresses and her pregnancy symptoms continue to get worse, Zoe spills the beans about her baby and Stan is understandably shocked. The couple go on a journey of preparation for the impeding child, and fall more in love along the way.
The trailer for the film is filled with cheap laughs, and reminds you of Lopez’s other rom-coms from the past ten years. This one doesn’t look like it’s the most hilarious out of the bunch, and I’m not sure if this is the most solid “come back piece” for her to reintroduce herself with.
The Back-up Plan hits theaters on April 16, 2010.
