Avatar Expected to Dominate the Box Office
By Krystal Clark![]()
After being years in the making James Cameron‘s Avatar is finally here. The film opened nationwide in conventional and IMAX theaters at midnight on December 18th. The movie is a big budget feature in every sense of the word, and it’s time to see if it can recoup its budget and make a decent profit.
According to the LATimes, Avatar is expected to gross around 80 million dollars over the three day weekend spanning Friday through Sunday. The people over at the film’s home studio 20th Century Fox seem to have lower expectations. Fox’s domestic distribution president, Bruce Snyder, predicted that Avatar would have an opening-weekend gross of $50 million to $60 million. Which is significantly lower than the expectations of box office trackers.
Overseas the film will open in over 105 countries in every major market except Italy, Japan and China. Even with the absence of those three countries, the film could easily rake in between 100 – 150 million dollars. If all goes according to plan, Avatar could find itself in the box office company of Spider-Man 3, Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, by making over 300 million dollars its first week.
Even though pre-release sales have been positive, the majority of the audience expected to see the film will be male. The teenage female demographic has the least amount of interest in watching the Cameron flick. The movie has only been in theaters since this morning, so there’s plenty of time to gauge its performance especially after the first day. I don’t think Avatar will bomb, but I doubt it will OVER perform. It will definitely be number one at the box office this week, it just depends on the capacity. Will it take the top spot with record breaking or mediocre numbers?
What do you think, will Avatar break box office records? If you are interested in this, you might want to check out our other posts.
