It’s been announced that Hollywood legend Roy E.Disney has passed away at the age of 79. He died Wednesday at his home in Newport Beach, California after a year long battle with stomach cancer. If the last name isn’t a give away, he was a part of the Disney empire that was created by his father and uncle back in the 1920s.
Roy Disney was the son of Roy O. Disney and the nephew of Walt Disney. The family’s famous studio was co-founded by the brothers with Walt as the company’s creative genius and Roy Sr. as the financial glue that held it all together. Roy Jr. never ran the company like his predecessors but he did own a significant portion of stock that grew into a billion dollar fortune causing him to form Shamrock Holdings with his friend Stanley Gold back in 1978
Current Disney president and CEO Robert Iger released an official statement regarding Roy’s passing.
“On behalf of everyone at Disney, we are saddened by the loss of our friend and colleague. He was much more than a valued 56-year company veteran. Roy’s commitment to the art of animation was unparalleled and will always remain his personal legacy and one of his greatest contributions to Disney’s past, present and future.”
Disney was born in 1930, and was the only son of Roy and Edna Disney. He went on to have a successful career as a writer, editor, and producer in the film and television industry. He is survived by his second wife, Leslie DeMeuse Disney, a TV producer; daughters Abigail E. Disney and Susan Disney Lord; sons Roy P. and Timothy J. Disney; and 16 grandchildren.
Roy Disney was a one of a kind act who proved that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
