Avatar opens in theaters everywhere this Friday, and all eyes are on James Cameron, Sam Worthington, and Zoe Saldana. Even though Worthington has his next feature Clash of the Titans already in the can, could another epic character be in his future? Over the past week, rumors have been spreading that the Australian actor might be interested in taking on the patriotic role of Captain America.
When Worthington showed up to one of the promotional events for Avatar wearing an Avengers T-shirt, fans went wild. That’s right, they went crazy because he wore a Marvel T-shirt. With the rumor released to the public, the people over at Sci-Fi Wire decided get the truth straight from the source. Here’s what he had to say,
“I know, the bloggers are going bananas,” the affable Australian said. “I’m a fan, man. I’m a big fan. And I’ve always said, if you’re going to wear a shirt on a blog or the TV, wear something you’re interested in. I’m not a billboard, so I’m going to wear something that I’m intrigued by. I’m a big Captain America fan.”
He went on to clarify that the producers from the film haven’t approached him to star as the title character, and he’s well aware that a lot of Americans don’t want him taking on the role. He’s read all the reactions online and laughed them off. He believes the only thing he and Captain America have in common is the ability to hold a shield (thanks to his role as Perseus in Clash of the Titans)
Would you object to Worthington playing Captain America? Who do you have in mind for the role?
