In the midst of early positive reviews, Avatar makes its first major impression by winning the Best Picture Award from the New York Film Critics Online group. This is a strong indicator that it will be more than just a popcorn flick and could emerge as a serious contender for the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The other big winner this year was Inglourious Basterds, which won four prizes including Best Screenplay and the 17 millionth win for Christoph Waltz as Best Supporting Actor. Jeff Bridges also firmed up his standing as a Best Actor contender with his second win of the day.
