The first theatrical trailer has been released for Jon Turteltaub’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The film stars Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer in question and Jay Baruchel as his apprentice. In all honesty after watching the footage a couple of times the movie looks mediocre, but it does have some good parts.
The film is loosely based on the Disney classic Fantasia, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice takes place in present day Manhattan. Cage plays a contemporary sorcerer who leaves everything in the hands of his apprentice (Baruchel) when he goes on a trip. The novice is given several chores and tasks to perform in his absence but uses magic to get a broomstick to do them for him. Things go from good to bad when the inanimate object begins to develop a mind of it’s own.
No matter how ridiculous Nicolas Cage looks in this trailer the special effects are amazing and Alfred Molina looks bad ass as the villain. The whole modern day Manhattan backdrop serves as an interesting setting for such an old school tale, and they’ll use that to their advantage.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice hits theaters next year on April 16, 2010.
