Later this month, on Christmas to exact, we’ll see singer-songwriter Tom Waits star as the Devil himself in Terry Gilliam‘s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Waits is no stranger to acting and has popped up in several notable films over the course of his career, which makes this latest casting rumor even sweeter. According to The Guardian, Waits might be up for a role in Peter Jackson‘s production of The Hobbit.
Earlier today we told you that Jackson and company intend on starting the casting process this week for every role in the movie. In this case, we know Waits isn’t up for Bilbo Baggins but he could possibly show up as a villain of choice. An anonymous source stated that the actor is at the top of director of Guillermo del Toro’s list, and his name has come up as a possibility. Nothing is set in stone but the word is spreading like wildfire.
I was lucky enough to see an early screening of Doctor Parnassus and his portrayal of the Devil is unconventional, but still devious. Waits is a memorable character actor, who knows how to deliver a performance no matter if it’s supporting or lead. The big question is who would he play?
Do you think Tom Waits could fit into The Hobbit world?
