The reboot of the once popular Jack Ryan franchise is still steadily moving along. The film’s last major development was that Star Trek‘s Chris Pine was in talks to star as Ryan, who was previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck. Over at Comingsoon, they’ve managed to get their hands on a few new details regarding the direction of the latest film.
Producer Mace Neufeld appeared at a press conference this morning for the upcoming Clint Eastwood drama, Invictus. While reporters had his attention they managed to get some info on the next Jack Ryan movie, and according to Neufeld it won’t be as action oriented as we think.
“We pick him up when he’s on Wall Street,” says Neufeld, “…[but] the Jack Ryan movie have never been action films. They’re kind of ‘thinking man’s thrillers.’ Jack is referred to as a ‘water-walker’ because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That’s very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that’s how we want to portray him. He’s a teacher. He’s a historian. He’s a linguist. And he’s really smart.”
No offense to Chris Pine, but we’re going to have to by him as a genius? Ben Affleck was already a stretch in Sum of All Fears, but now this guy? The first draft of the script has been completed by Hossein Amini and a rewrite by Adam Cozad is set to start soon. The biggest point Neufeld wanted to make is that even though the character will be younger, this won’t be an origin story.
The last good franchise that was able to balance thrills and action was the Bourne trilogy, and now that it’s gone by the way side this is what we’ll have to look forward to.
What do you think of the new take on Jack Ryan?
