Todd Phillips didn’t waste anytime working on the sequel to last summer’s hit, The Hangover. The director recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly and gave a script update, and dished about a couple of changes that he’s made in terms of the film’s location. In the last movie, Las Vegas was almost a secondary character but Phillips says it won’t be the focal point the next time around.

It’s no secret that Phillips was already toying with the idea of directing a sequel while shooting the first film. He was actually encouraged by the studio to do another installment.

“You always have those days when you say, ‘If we did another one, wouldn’t it be funny if…?’ ” Phillips says. “Then once the movie tested so well, Warner Bros. came to me even before it was released and said, ‘Let’s do another one.’

Movie studios can smell commercial success a mile away so Warner Bros immediate interest sounds like a logical move. As for the sequel in question, Phillips wants to switch it up a bit, while keeping the essence of the original film.

“What people loved about The Hangover was not Las Vegas or the bachelor party but these three characters,” Phillips says. “I think you can take those characters and put them in other situations, and you don’t need the sell of Vegas and a bachelor party and all that other stuff.”

The only odd thing about the sequel is the fact that it will be called The Hangover 2. What will their obstacle be this time without Vegas as the backdrop? (Spoiler Alert) Will Alan once again slip them something that causes them to forget what happened the previous night? That’s what’s scary about making another one, the first film can stand alone and doesn’t really need a follow up.
