5 films to scare your family with on thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for family, and there’s nothing like curling up with the ones you love to watch a good film. But beware, that comfort can change with the click of a button thanks to that “random” movie you thought was about one thing but was actually about another.

We’ve gathered the Top Five Films to Scare Your Family With this holiday season, and they feature movies with titles that may come off as a little misleading. The Last Tango and Paris isn’t a sweet love story, Do The Right Thing isn’t about peer pressure, and The Last Temptation of Christ has more to do with temptation than you’d care to know.

Check out our list…

people vs larry flynt

5. The People vs. Larry Flynt

Larry Flynt embodies everything that Conservatives hate. He knows the law and hides behind it in an effort to further his career of publishing and producing porn. He loves sex, drugs, and most importantly controversy and does everything he can to prove that pornography is a legitimate form of business.

Why its Scary:

Not only does this movie include plenty of risque images from scantily clad women, it also highlights a relationship between Flynt and a stripper who ends up dying from full blown AIDS. Promiscuity, drug use, and Flynt’s ability to manipulate the court system will piss off any old school law abiding citizen.

4. Do the Right Thing

This Spike Lee Joint is one of the most uncomfortable movies to watch because it openly offends everyone no matter their race, color, or creed. It highlights the tension between African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, Italians and everyone under the sun in New York City.

Why its Scary:

This movie will shock due to its unapologetic approach to the subject of racism. Everyone gets called out on their flaws and some of the nastiest stereotypes are put front and center for all to see. If your family thinks the world is all rainbows and unicorns, this film would be a much needed wake up call.

tango in paris

3. The Last Tango in Paris

This is not a romantic comedy. I repeat, this is NOT a romantic comedy. The Last Tango in Paris stars the legendary Marlon Brando as Paul, a middle aged widower who engages in a sexual relationship with a young woman he barely knows. Their affair quickly turns from hot to cold when the woman decides to break it off and Paul can’t take no for an answer.

Why its Scary:

This film contains one of the most unnerving and objectifying rape scenes in movie history. The very sight of it will make any woman’s stomach turn thanks to the graphic nature of it. The movie gained lots of controversy for its nudity and sexual content, especially the rape which features the heavy involvement of a certain food item. You’ll flinch at the first sight of it, guaranteed!

birth of a nation

2. Birth of a Nation

D.W. Griffith’s The Birth of A Nation is known for being one of the first feature length films in the history of the medium, but it’s also one of the biggest pieces of racist and political propaganda to ever be produced. It takes place during the Reconstruction period in the U.S, and paints the KKK as heroes who try to save the “purity” of the South from the African-American population.

Why its Scary:

The African-American stereotypes highlighted in this movie were beyond offensive. They were portrayed as overly sexualized manipulators who were out to destroy the government. The film’s villain Gus (above), is portrayed by a Caucasian actor in Black-face and is hunted down and killed because he lusted after a White woman who decided she’d rather leap to her death than be with him. The film undermines every ounce of progress this country has made in the past century and paints the KKK as heroes. What a joke!

last temptation of christ 2

1. The Last Temptation of Christ

Martin ScorsesesThe Last Temptation of Christ depicts everything you NEVER wanted to know about Jesus. It doesn’t matter if you’re Christian, Jewish, or Islamic this film will burn some unwanted images into your brain. The film shows Christ as flawed, and doubtful in his position as the son of God. He’s a regular human being shown with normal thoughts and desires, which will make the average church goer feel uneasy.

Why its Scary:

The movie shows Jesus having a fantasy about Mary Magdalene, the reformed prostitute he saved from being killed. He actually has visions of having sex with her, and no one wants to think about Jesus getting it on! NO ONE!

Are there any movies that you accidentally showed your family that were too explicit for them to see? What was it and how did you explain your way out of it?
