Idris Elba Cast in Thor
By Krystal Clark
Idris Elba is everywhere these days and I’m loving every minute of it. The former star of HBO’s The Wire, as well as the upcoming comic adaptation, The Losers has just hit the mother load. According to THR Elba has just been cast in Kenneth Branagh’s live action adaptation of Thor.
Elba will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard, who stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders. He is the latest of many casting announcements that have come from the Marvel Studios production. Most recently the roles of the Warriors Three was filled and now Stringer Bell from The Wire is taking on Heimdall. The film is set to start production mid-January in Manhattan Beach, California.
The cast of Thor includes too many good actors to count at this point and our level of excitement is through the roof. Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Chris Hemsworth are all on board this Marvel train. With production starting so soon, photos will eventually start surfacing online and we’ll finally get to see what Branagh has in mind for the Nordic based tale. Thor is scheduled to hit theaters on May 20, 2011.
What do you think of Idris Elba joining Thor?

Heimdall's was my favorite character when I read Norse myth for a class. At Ragnarok he's the first to know of the coming reckoning and the last to fall as he and Loki kill each other. I'm not sure which is dorkier information, but in the comics he's also pretty badass, whose senses are so acute that he can see the near future. Also, I suppose I'm the only one that finds the humor in the casting since Heimdall is known as the "Whitest of the Gods", due to his valor, of course.
Now that I got that out, the casting for this movie has made me excited for this film. First Zatoichi and now Stringer? Wheeee!

I've been reading Thor comics for over 20 years and never concieved that there could be "Asgardians of color" because they never went this route in the books – everyone was expectedly Nordic. This is a bold and interesting move by Branagh and crew and I'm totally excited by it. Now that I see they have knocked down Asgard's color barrier, I may have to get my incredibly fit, handsome, Black self to New Mexico to try to get in as an extra.
