The talented Mr. Sam Rockwell will be seen in theaters nationwide next year when he makes an appearance as one of the main villains in the highly anticipated sequel, Iron Man 2. Rockwell will play a rich weapon’s dealer by the name of Justin Hammer. In a recent interview with MTV, the actor pointed out some of the changes he made to the character and what influences he pulled from other villainous performances to make the bad guy pop.
To get any info on Iron Man 2 is like pulling teeth for a journalist, but somehow, someway they got Sam Rockwell to spill the beans on his character’s persona. In the Marvel comic, Justin Hammer is an old, manipulative business man, and from what we’ve scene of him in the film he’s a bit more hip. Rockwell talked about how he found his inner Hammer, and who he used as inspiration for the role.
“I got some research—they sent me over some stuff,” Rockwell told MTV News. “I looked it over and that was about it. I kind of took my own ideas from other things,” he added. “A little bit of Lex Luthor stuff—[Kevin] Spacey and [Gene] Hackman. I think there’s a little bit of Bill Murray in Kingpin in it, and probably some Richard Gere American Gigolo.”
While at Comic-Con they showed a trailer to the film and you could obviously tell that Rockwell wasn’t going to portray the character like your grandpa’s Justin Hammer. He’s very smooth and arrogant, but still likable. He’s not as black and white, in comparison to Mickey Rourke‘s Whiplash who is an obvious baddie with no signs of gray. Hopefully when an official trailer drops for the film we’ll get to see more of both of these guys, but that probably won’t happen for a while.
What do you think of Sam Rockwell’s portrayal of Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2?
