Just when you thought the board game movies were done, Sony Pictures decides to bring another one into the feature film fold. According to Variety, the studio has its eye set on a live action adaptation of Risk, the popular Hasbro strategy game. As of late, the toy company has been pimping out the majority of their popular properties, so this development shouldn’t come as a shock.
According to the trade, the game that “pits players against one another in a quest to annex all of the world’s territories, became desirable in recent years thanks to the success of another Hasbro property, Transformers (no surprise there).” Unlike a lot of other board games, Risk relies heavily on strategy and thought, two things that can easily be woven into a feature film plot.
“The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make Risk a classic, thoroughly engaging game,” said Columbia president Doug Belgrad. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.”
Even though this game-movie trend is getting way out of hand, Risk is one of the few that doesn’t seem so far-fetched. There are certain elements to the game that could be worked into a storyline. It’s similar to Clue, which centered on solving a murder. With Risk, wouldn’t it be interesting if they turned it into some politically charged drama that kind of mimics War Games, the early eighties movie with Matthew Broderick?
