The Academy wastes NO TIME do they? Just hours after news broke that Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. weren’t interested in hosting next year’s Oscar ceremony, THR is reporting that Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin will! That’s right, a former movie now TV star will stand beside a comedic legend to take on hosting duties for the 2010 show.
According to the trade, this will be Martin’s third time hosting the show as he’s taken on the responsibility twice before (solo) in 2001 and 2003. He even went on to earn a Primetime Emmy nomination for his work. Baldwin on the other hand has never hosted the show, but has presented many times, the last occurrence being in 2004 when he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work in The Cooler (a film that completely slipped my mind).
The actors have a lot in common considering they’ve both hosted Saturday Night Live more times than many other entertainers, 15 appearances for Martin and 14 for Baldwin. They recently worked together when Martin did a guest spot on 30 Rock, which earned the actor another Emmy nod.
Warming up for the inevitable banter, Martin said: “I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” while Baldwin volleyed back, “I don’t play the banjo, but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars.”
Not sure if that statement was supposed to be funny or not, but let’s assume Alec will get better in time. Martin did a great job his previous times on the Oscar stage so there’s no doubt that he can pull this off. Baldwin has never taken on a live hosting gig of this magnitude so it will be interesting to see how he fares with this.
The 82nd Oscars will be held March 7th and will be broadcast live on ABC.
