George Clooney is currently busy filming the Anton Corbijn directed feature, The American but he’s still making deals while in the middle of production. According to Variety, the actor is in negotiations to star in the film adaptation of the Kaui Hart Hemmings novel, The Descendants. The film will be a dramedy, which will show Clooney as an unconventional family man.
The story for The Descendants centers on a wealthy landowner who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife’s lover in the hopes of keeping his family together. The film will be directed by Alexander Payne from a script written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. As you can tell from reading the basic premise, this is not a typical story about a father making decisions to keep his family in tact.
The main character is a rich man who discovers that his comatose wife was having an affair, and he has to decide whether or not to pull the plug on her. Not only that, but he packs up his kids and goes on a trip to find her boyfriend to confront him about the relationship. If all goes well, this would be the first Clooney-Payne collaboration, and Payne’s first feature in five years.
At the moment Clooney is simply “interested” in the project, but hasn’t attached or officially signed on to anything. It would be a nice part for him to inhabit, it’s been such a long time since we’ve seen him in a family-centric role. This would be a step in a direction that we haven’t seen Clooney explore in a while. The Descendants is scheduled to start shooting in February of next year.
