After months of waiting and speculation, Disney has finally released a trailer for the live action adaptation of the video game, Prince of Persia. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan and Gemma Arterton as Princess Tamina, a reluctant duo who are on a mission to keep a powerful nobleman from possessing a mystical dagger that can control the sands of time.

After the release of this trailer, fans are already ripping it apart to find every major and minor flaw in the production. One of the main complaints have to do with Jake’s accent in the film. For some odd reason people have an issue with him sounding British. To clarify, if you’ve ever played the video game, you would know that the character does in fact sound like that so they’re being true to the source material in that respect. If anything, Gemma’s constant narration in the trailer easily became a buzz in my ear.
Dastan and Tamina seem to share a relationship similar to Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser in The Mummy. The special effects here are a bit underwhelming, and also have a Mummy-like quality, which isn’t really a good thing. It looks as if Disney is trying to give birth to another major franchise that could possibly follow in the footsteps of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2010 and is directed by Mike Newell.
