Holy shiznit! Anthony Hopkins has been cast in Kenneth Branagh‘s Thor, according to THR. The veteran actor is set to take on the role of Odin, Thor’s father. This comes completely out of left field considering the rumors that Branagh regular Brian Blessed was said to be the front runner for the part.
According to the trade, Hopkins is in negotiations to play the paternal figure in the Paramount-Marvel Studios production of the comic adaptation. Odin is not only Thor’s father but also the ruler of their homeland, Asgard. In the comic he’s a major force to be reckoned with, as he’s the catalyst behind Thor’s radical change.
The movie’s story sees the god of thunder as a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
This news just knocked my socks off. I had no idea that Hopkins was even interested in this role, but it is fitting. He’s one of the few actors out there who I could just watch, and be entranced. Kenneth Branagh is taking this film very seriously and I like it. He’s taking the Christopher Nolan approach by casting real actors instead of pretty stand-ins.
What do you think about Anthony Hopkins joing the cast of Thor?
