Boo! Paul Blart: Mall Cop continues to haunt me from the grave. The movie that became a surprise hit for everyone involved earlier this year, has spawned new work for its director. According to Variety, Dimension Films has signed Steve Carr to direct the remake of the 1986 sci-fi comedy, Short Circuit. So, unfortunately the studio is actually going to go through with this new take on the old film.
The new Short Circuit script will be written by Dan Milano, who I’m actually a fan of via his work on Robot Chicken with Seth Green. The story will center once again center on Johnny 5, a robot built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon who develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family. Carr will not only direct but co-produce the film with his banner, Rumpus Entertainment.
I can’t trust anyone who had a hand in Paul Blart: Mall Cop. To this very day my mind is still boggled by the world’s obsession with it. How did it become such a success? I’ll never know. What I do know is that the idea of remaking Short Circuit spells disaster. There’s no need for it. The film was campy and fun by eighties standards, but it doesn’t have a timeless quality to it.
What do you think about Steve Carr directing Short Circuit?
