JJ Abrams has already made his mark on the legendary Star Trek franchise, and now he has his eye on another iconic series, Superman. We all know that over the past few years, the Man of Steel has been treated like the red headed step-child at Warner Bros, and to many of his fans that’s unfortunate. Abrams recently spoke up about his interest in making a film featuring the hero, and how he already has a script in place.
Over the past week or so news regarding Abram’s once written Superman script has resurfaced, and it has fans wondering if something will ever come of it. MTV spoke to the writer-director about the idea of bringing his vision to life and here’s what he had to say.
“No one has talked to me about it,” Abrams told MTV News. “Obviously I’m sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do.” “Writing that script was a long process,” he explained. “It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don’t know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast.”
He also claims that the version of the script that was leaked onto the internet wasn’t a final draft, so many of the critiques were a bit unjustified.
“That version of the movie—the one that was reviewed and vilified—was actually not the latest draft we had at the time and we worked on it well after that. I do think there’s a version of that movie that could be really fun to see,” said Abrams. “You never really know. Everything happens for a reason.”
Warner Bros has openly placed Supes on the back burner, and allowed films like The Green Lantern to take front and center. I haven’t read Abram’s script but I’m sure it’s a great read. Lost and Fringe and two of my favorite shows, and Star Trek was pretty good, so I wouldn’t be opposed to his vision on this.
