I was somewhat happy after watching the Iron Man 2 behind the scenes footage we posted, but unfortunately I’ve been knocked down a peg. Over at MTV Jon Favreau finally responded to the question we’ve all been dying to hear the answer to. Will he or won’t he direct The Avengers movie? According to him, we’re going to have to go with a “no” on that one.

Here’s what Favreau had to say regarding his involvement with the film.

“They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available,” he explained. “It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.”

At least he will be involved in some capacity. I think his take on Iron Man was the perfect combination of action, comedy, and good storytelling. The director thinks that the rest of the Marvel properties will be in good hands with or without him behind the camera.

“That’s why it’s good that you have the guys from Marvel like Kevin Feige, who knows the books well and has been involved with the making of all the movies, and he’ll be very involved with Thor and Cap, said Favreau. “You need somebody who has the perspective of all the different franchises to bring them together. I have the myopic vision of just knowing and loving Iron Man.”

I will admit that the two Marvel films released last year were pretty decent, so my standards for the next few installments are pretty high. I hope they can deliver.

Iron Man 2 will be in theaters on May 7, 2010. The Avengers is slated for a May 4, 2012 release.

Who do you think should direct The Avengers movie?
