Is Ian Mckellen the only person in The Hobbit fold willing to spill the beans on the movie? It seems like everytime we turn around he’s got something new to say about the production. This time the actor spoke out at the San Sebastian Film Festival and gave more juice on the Guillermo del Toro project as well as the developing X-Men spin-off, Magneto.
The people over at Empire caught up with the actor while at the film festival and asked him the important questions. First up his update on The Hobbit.
“The scripts for the two films will be delivered very soon,” he revealed. “Then they’ll be budgeted, and then they’ll be cast. And they’ll be going when they’ve always said they would be, which is next spring – March or April. Guillermo even told me at one point, ‘We’re going to film for 383 days.’ He’s got that artistic autism!
“Unfortunately, there won’t be many of the actors going back,” he said, “unless they’re going to put masks on and be disguised as dwarves! Andy Serkis is, at the moment, I think, the only other actor who’s doing this film.”
Hmm, so the pending scripts are on their way. They better be, we’ve been hearing about them being written for what seems like an eternity. Next up, what does McKellen have to say about the Magneto film?
“There’s meant to be a Magneto script floating around, but I’ve not read it, so I suspect it wouldn’t involve me,” he said. “I think it would be about the younger Magneto, and the most I could hope for would be to top and tail that. They can’t have someone whose face is as lined as mine any longer!”
Why do people keep asking him if he’ll reprise his role as Magneto? It’s supposed to be a prequel, with an emphasis of youth. Unless they tell the story from a hindsight perspective with him narrating there’s no point of him being in it. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ian but Magneto is a badass character, and we need to see him in his prime.
What do you think of the latest developments on the Hobbit and Magneto front?
