Just last week we reported on Gary Ross possibly directing the Spider-Man spin-off, Venom. Now according to The Playlist, the comic based film may have to take a backseat to a Steven Spielberg project. A few months ago there were rumors about a developing Spielberg feature entitled, Matt Helm, but the director is out and a close source says Ross will helm the film instead.
According to their source, “Venom is a ways off and will have to wait, Matt Helm, is coming first and is being scheduled to shoot in the summer of 2010 if all goes according to plan.” The script for the Helm film was recently turned into the studio by Academy Award nominated writer Paul Attanasio, so I’m not surprised that Venom isn’t as high on the totem pole.
Venom is scheduled for release in 2011, the same year as its counterpart Spider-Man 4. The script for the film has yet to be finalized, because Ross was just hired to rewrite as well as direct a week ago. I know there’s a huge outcry for a Venom in the comic community, but I have a bad feeling about this. I don’t think the character can hold his own movie without some type of Spidey influence. Ross’ decision to push back the film’s start date doesn’t exactly show the biggest vote of confidence.
What do you think of Ross taking on Matt Helm, over Venom?
