This will come as pleasant news for die hard fans of the X-Men franchise. According to THR, X-Men and X2: X-Men United director Bryan Singer may return to the film series after a long hiatus. Following his exit, the third film was directed by Brett Ratner, and the Wolverine spin-off was helmed by Gavin Hood. It turns out Singer is interested in making another film, and has already discussed some future possibilities with 20th Century Fox.
“I’m still looking to possibly returning to the X-Men franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it,” Singer said at a talk at South Korea’s Pusan International Film Festival. “I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast. “
Singer went on to discuss his love of the science fiction genre, because of its ability to illustrate serious issues through entertainment. If the director is serious about his return to the mutant franchise, what film could he take on? The studio already has Deadpool, First Class, and Wolverine 2 in development. If he decides to work on any project, it should be Magneto.
I think he had a good thing going with the small part of Magneto’s history that was shown in the beginning of the first X-Men. Do you know how amazing two hours of that type of footage would be? Even though Singer was behind the best X-Men film of the series (X2), I don’t think he’s without flaws.
My main issue with his X-Men films had to do with the set up of certain characters. I never liked the fact that Rogue and Bobby were turned into teenagers, or that Beast didn’t show up until the third movie. Storm was underdeveloped and so was Cyclops. That being said, if he takes on another property, he should stick closer to the context of the comic.
Do you think Singer should return to the X-Men franchise?
