How much testosterone does one film need? The casting for the big screen adaptation of John Carter of Mars is starting to remind me of 300 from a few years back. The cast of John Carter is led by Taylor Kitsch in the title role, with Willem Dafoe on board as his right hand man, and according to THR, James Purefoy, Thomas Hayden Church, and Mark Strong have all signed on to co-star.
Church will star as Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler. Purefoy will play the character Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship, and Strong will portray Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status. The rest of the cast features Dominic West, Samantha Morton, and Lynn Collins.
After reading the character descriptions, I’m pretty sure that Mark Strong will be a bad guy. Whenever I see his name in a casting announcement that’s where my mind automatically goes. As for the rest of the crew, both actors have had their fair share of comic and novel adaptations. We’ll erase Church’s stint as the Sandman in Spider-Man 3 out of respect for his talent, but other than that the cast looks great.
What do you think of the latest additions to John Carter of Mars?
