Spider-Man 4 is currently in pre-production, and according to Sci-Fi Wire the Venom spin-off might not be that far behind. Zombieland co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been hired to pen the screenplay for the film, and they have given us a status update. They let us in on whether or not the film is still going strong or if it’s been lost in the Marvel shuffle.
According to the site, Wernick confirmed in an interview that Venom is still moving full speed ahead, and they’ve already submitted the screenplay to Sony.
“We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward,”
The second major question besides the script status, is when will Venom finally go into production? Wernick said they’re not sure, so all they can do is wait until they hear word back from the studio. He also stated that he couldn’t let us know whether or not the film will be shot before or after Spider-Man 4, or if there will be a connection between the two films.
That type of evasion scares me because it means they’ve got something up their sleeve. After the abomination that was represented in Spider-Man 3, I can’t blame fans for wanting the character done right. I don’t personally know what stories he could hold on his own, that don’t involve some kind of Spidey influence. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was Sony’s answer to Paramount’s massive Avengers crossover. Perhaps they could have Venom and Spider-Man do the same?
What do you think of the latest Venom update? Should they do a Venom movie?
