There’s no doubt that Darren Aronofsky is one of the most innovative directors in Hollywood. He’s gone from drug addicts, to wrestlers, to ballet without missing a beat, and now he’s got robbery on the brain. According to Cinematical, the director is developing a feature illustrating the world’s greatest bank heist. It will be based on a true story that centers on UFC and MMA fighter “Lighting” Lee Murray’s involvement in a major bank robbery that occurred a few years ago.
“Lighting” Lee Murray was allegedly involved in the 2006 robbery of the Securitas Depot. Over $85 million was stolen from the English depot, making it the largest cash heist in history. Aronofsky and his Protozoa Films will co-produce the project alongside XYZ Films and Time Inc. The screenplay will be written by Kerry Williamson, which will be based on the Howard Sounes’ book, Heist: The Inside Story of the World’s Biggest Robbery and Jon Wertheim’s Sports Illustrated article “Breaking the Bank.”
Finding an actor who can embody the reckless spirit that “Lighting” Lee Murray has will be the biggest challenge with this film. Murray has been in and out of prison over the past few years, even attempting a break out once or twice. Mastering his persona will be an interesting character study for any actor or director, and we all know how Darren loves character driven films.
Who do you think could play “Lighting” Lee Murray? Are you familiar with his criminal background?
