Robert Downey Jr is Spielberg’s Harvey?

A while back we reported on the development news that Steven Spielberg would be directing a remake of the classic Henry Koster film, Harvey. The 1950 original starred James Stewart in the lead as a big-hearted eccentric who’s branded a crackpot for claiming to have a 6-foot tall invisible rabbit buddy. The biggest question that haunts this project is who will play Stewart’s character? According to Latino Review, Robert Downey Jr. may be up for the challenge.
When Harvey was first announced as Spielberg’s next feature, many people thought Tom Hanks or Will Smith would be great picks for the film. We were wrong, because it looks like the charismatic Mr. Downey has done it again.
Spielberg is presently focusing on his ‘reimagining’ of ‘Harvey,’ with Robert Downey Jr. possibly playing the man who sees an invisible rabbit.”
Even though Downey isn’t pure as the God-given know in terms of his Hollywood persona, I believe he could play this role. The talent is there, there’s no doubt about it. If we can get over him playing an African-American soldier, trapped in the Vietnam era during Tropic Thunder, we should be able to buy this. I can see him starring as the James Stewart character a lot easier than I can see him playing Lestat in The Vampire Chronicles. I’m really having a hard time wrapping my mind around that one.
Do you think Robert Downey Jr. could pull off the lead in Harvey?

Yes, I think he will be fantastic. I actually think he is the perfect one to play the part. RDJ is an exceptional actor, with exceptional talents. Noone else could truly play the part as well as he'll be able to. He's a great choice! Spielbergs made a wonderful choice, now let's all just pray it's true!
