If you’re a die hard Superman fan this article is for you. There has been much talk about rebooting the Man of Steel franchise to compensate for the mediocre response of its last film. Some even speculated that the studio would angle for a darker Superman movie, that could follow in the footsteps of The Dark Knight and Watchmen. According to MTV, you can chalk all that up to speculation because there are no plans to revamp the character anytime in the near future.
The president of the recently formed DC Entertainment Diane Nelson, spoke about the future of the current Superman franchise.
We actually don’t have any current plans for Superman,” said Nelson when asked if the new environment (and the recent legal decision regarding the character) made a Superman movie more or less likely in the near future… We’ve obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it’s a key part of the family, but we don’t have current plans behind Superman,” she said.
A slight wave of relief washed over me as I read this. I’m not as into Superman as much as a lot of other people, but I do respect the character and his place in pop culture. Bryan Singer‘s 2006 take on the comic character was just too much for me to handle, and I mean that in a negative way. The character needs this break from the silver screen, because he’s an icon who should be presented properly.
Could you imagine if they fast tracked another film to compete with Marvel’s onslaught of Avengers‘ movies? Not only that, but Warners’ own Green Lantern, the third Batman, and The Losers are all comic book films that might overshadow his presence. That would definitely be the worse case scenario, especially if the script isn’t right.
What do you think about DC Entertainment’s decision to back away from the Superman series?
