Disney’s D23 Movie Expo: Not All They Hoped For…

ScreenCrave has been reporting on the events at this year’s Disney D23 Expo and one thing is for sure, it’s still got some growing up to do. While we’ve been keeping you updated on all the developing news regarding the event, there has been one thing that all D23 goers have all been saying, where are all the people? They have a similar set up to events like Comic-Con, in fact walking through the hallways, one reminisces of Con days gone by, but the lack of crowding, news and lines make one thing clear… this ain’t no Comic-Con, at least not yet…
It appears that the turn out for D23 has been far below expectations. People were saying that the expected body count was supposed to be somewhere between 60,000 – 70,000 people, but from what I saw, it looked more like a quarter of that. This morning, they started the Disney presentation over 30 minutes late and one wonders if they were just hoping for the room to fill, which it never fully did, even though half the people in the room has Disney employee badges.
That being said, this is there first year for the convention and it does show promise. Maybe in 10 years I’ll be able to say “I remember when D23 had no lines, everything was air conditioned, you could easily park, and the Internet worked in EVERY room.” None of which I’m complaining about, but the lack of things to do did leave us wandering a bit more than we normally would have liked.
One thing is for sure, I’ll be back tomorrow to see clips from Tron and Alice in Wonderland.
What do you think? Do you think this could be the next big convention?

[...] I posted earlier, D23 is quite a bit slower than Comic-Con and as a result there was quite a bit of wandering time [...]

I dunno how it could be a failure. I love movies and I've never heard of it…oh, wait..

I was there today (sat 9-12) and was very disapointed in the show. I got there at 9am and was done seeing all of it by 1. There is a lot of down time. Not very many places to buy things and nothing is at a special deal. I mean we planned on buying tickets to Disneyland for our next trip up there and it was only a 4 dollar savings. Not what we expected. Hope it gets better. We will go again in a few years.

Disney's Official Disneyana Convention all over again just with a new name of D23. Nothing new – seen all before don't understand why all the hype. They will drive this into the ground just the way they did with the Disneyana Conventions. Trying to be like Comic-Con but they lack much creativity and experience. And as for the Disney Legends Awards thought it was kind of interesting that Tony Anselmo recieved one especially after he was let go awhile back for theft of original Disney art that he checked out for supposedly research purposes and never returned it. If you ask me kind of a disgrace to the true Disney Legends but it's Disney so it does not suprise me.
