A week ago news broke that the multi-talented Tyler Perry would direct his first feature film that’s not based on his own work. Perry will adapt the 1975 stage play entitled, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. It was originally written by Ntozake Shange, and features a series of monologues based on the colors of the rainbow. According to Latino Review Perry recently teased that the film will feature a “dream cast” of talent, which would include African American and Latina women.
While out promoting his current film I Can Do Bad All by Myself, Perry stated that he has already reached out to several actresses for roles in The Rainbow is Enuf, and he’s received some positive responses. So far he’s made six phone calls to various women, and all six of them are enthusiastic about the project.
Perry rattled off the names of some of the actresses he would be interested in working with and I have to admit, it really is a dream cast. Some of his picks include Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Ruby Dee, Cicely Tyson, Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Beyonce Knowles, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys.
First of all, having legends such as Ruby Dee, Cicely Tyson, and Maya Angelou in the same film may cause the movie screen to explode. That is too much talent for people to handle. It would also be interesting to see Angela Bassett opposite Halle Berry, because they’re acting styles are so different from one another. Angela is one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood, and given the right material she could blow anyone out of the water.
Word on the street is that Lionsgate will be making a big announcement regarding the film some time soon. I’m hoping it has to do with one or more if these talented women. We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for the latest on this story.
Who do you think should star in Tyler Perry’s next film?
