Video Interview with Shane Acker – Director of 9
By Mali Elfman
It’s almost time for the release of Shane Acker‘s first animated feature film, 9, produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, and starring Elijah Wood. For those of you who have yet to hear about Acker, his story is a Hollywood dream come true, but that’s not to say that he hasn’t dedicated his life to making this film. To make a long story short extremely short, it took Acker ten years to get 9 to the big screen.
Much like how District 9 director Neill Blomkamp got his film off the ground with help from Peter Jackson, 9 began with Burton and Bekmambetov seeing something great in Acker’s short film which took him 6 years and his own time and money to create. The feature film, though much longer and with more characters, only took him about 4 years to put together, thanks to his producers support and added budget.
A little while ago we got to sit down and talk to Acker one on one about creating his dementedly gorgeous film, ripping off his producers and even the possibility of a sequel. Check out what he had to say below…
Part 1: Working with Burton and Bekmambetov, and stealing their ideas…
Part 2: Before Acker was a film-maker, he was an architect, and it shows…
Part 3: In Acker’s short film, his characters did not speak. In his film not only do they speak, but more are added. Find out why…
Part 4: Chance of 10?
Part 5: Run time. Ever want it to be longer? Because we wanted/needed more!
If you like this, find out what Acker, Burton and Bekmambetov had to say about the film at Comic-Con.
9 will be in theaters on 9-9-09! Will you go to see it?
