I’m not in the minority when I express disdain for the upcoming sequel Resident Evil 4: Afterlife, so imagine my surprise when I discovered that a fifth film is on its way? According to Bloody Disgusting, the video game adaptation has been confirmed for another sequel that will serve as a semi-reboot for the entire franchise. In unison let as all exclaim, “Why?”
The star of these films, Milla Jovovich has been confirmed to reprise her role in Afterlife, but the buck stops there. Any participation beyond that remains unclear. Keeping the actress on board may prove to be a costly investment for the studio, and their not sure if they want to make that type of commitment. This is where the idea of a reboot comes into play. The studio is exploring several different options for the fifth film tentatively titled Resident Evil: Begins.
The idea is to redo the story of a special military unit who fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.
Wasn’t that the plot to the very first film? When I think of a rebooted franchise with “Begins” in the title I automatically jump to Batman. I know that franchise doesn’t own the word, but I can’t help it. I don’t think the Resident Evil films will ever go beyond mediocre status, especially if Paul W.S. Anderson continues to produce them. After my forgettable exposure to Resident Evil:Extinction I have no desire to see this franchise have an Afterlife, a reboot, or anything else that would expand its material.
What do you think about Resident Evil getting a reboot?
